The neighborhood features a collection of tudors, bungalows, ranch housing, and is said to be "an example of urban living with a suburban feel." It is named for Irving Hale (1861 - 1930), a U.S. brigadier general, who served in the Philippines during the Spanish American War and the early stages of the Philippine-American War.

In 1924, the University of Colorado School of Medicine moved from Boulder to the Hale neighborhood. The new hospital was known as Colorado General, later renamed University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. This site is currently awaiting redevelopment.

The Veterans Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System hospital is also located in the Hale neighborhood. The VA hospital is slated to relocate to the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado after 2013. The future of the current VA hospital building and site is to be determined.
