  In most parts of India, and in Universities,in India, people use surnames after their names to perpetuate the pernicious Caste system. As a first step to abolish the varna/Jathi/Caste system in India, Thanthai Periyar who was in Congress Party upto 1919, was of the view that one should stop using the surname as a suffix to his name. But this view has not received much prominence except in the South, particularly in some parts of Tamil Nadu. In the North, people likes to continue to be called by their surnames for recognition and separation from the rest.
