  • Blue Plains is the largest Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in the world. It is the single point greatest reduction of Nitrogen and other nutrients going to the Chesapeake Bay. It has new odor control systems coming online as this is posted. Blue Plains treats an average of 370 million gallons of wastewater a day from all of DC and parts of MD and VA. That would hardly qualify it as the largest source of pollution.
  • Also, if you look at the north end of the pier you will see darker water. That is the discharge from the plant. This location is always amoung the top 10 best fishing spots in the United States due to the clarity of the water. The water Blue Plains discharges into the Potomac River is as clear as tap water.
