Bodie is a ghost town on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, elevation 8,369 feet. Gold was discovered here in 1859 by W. S. Bodey. Major gold strikes in 1876 and 1878 resulted in a population of more than 9,000 as of 1880. Since 1961 the population has been nominally "zero," but Park Rangers remain on site throughout the year.

To view the gold mines of the Bodie Mining District, please turn on the Historical Layer (or, alternatively, use the category "gold mine"). This can be found by performing a search on "Categories" menu item. Each red dot represents one of Bodie's mines. The mines depicted here represent mines from two of Bodie's mining eras. One is from the early era (1860s and 70s), on the other from Bodie's last era in the 1930s. This does not represent all of the mines from either era. If maps for other eras can be obtained, those mines can be added, as well
Were you to be able to see all the outlines at once, you would notice how mines overlap one another. This shows two phenomena: 1) the overlap of mines at various elevations underground, and 2) the purchase, resale, division, and consolidation of the mining interests.
Bodie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
If you have any specific descriptions to add to the mines, please feel free.
