Ancient Agora (Ancient Market): The ruins of the ancient agora were found between the years 1948 and 1955 to the northeast of the town of Thassos near the harbor, next to the museum. The agora was a huge rectangular area that was lined on three sides with shops and storerooms. There was a court flanked by colonnades in the middle of the ancient agora that was decorated with statues and altars. On the north eastern side were located the administrative and cult buildings.
The agora was the commercial and cultural centre of the city where locals and foreigners met for business transactions and leisure. To the north of the agora you will see the ruins of the ancient temple of Dionysus that dates back to the 4th Century B. C. You will also come across the Poseidonio, a sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon with a circular wall surrounding a U-shaped altar. The present day entrance to agora is in the museum square.
