This area became a sanctuary in 1977. It is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia and is also a provincial park reserve. The sanctuary was created to control the use of motor vehicles and to prevent hunting in the vicinity of the Upper Clements Wildlife Park. The wildlife park is no longer part of the sanctuary. Hunting and trapping are prohibited, there are restrictions on the use of motor vehicles, and fires are permitted only in areas provided. The land is leased to the Upper Clements Wildlife Park Society.
