This sanctuary consists of two small lakes in the Missaquash Marsh, including the land within 100 yards of the high water mark of the lakes. These areas were made a sanctuary in 1961 prior to the development of the Missiquash Marsh for waterfowl habitat. The intent was to provide an area where waterfowl could rest undisturbed.
Total area of the sanctuary is 159.6 hectares, of which 9.2 hectares is private land, with the remainder owned by the Province. The strips of land around the lakes are mostly wetland but also include 9.8 hectares of forested land.
