Originaly named by Captain Bartholomew Gosnold,"Marthas Vineyard" after his eldest daughter. The name for some reason was later transferred to the present Marthas Vineyard. In 1924 the islands owner discovered an alleged Viking runestone. The island was used by the US Navy as a bombing range from 1943 to 1996 and it is presumed to be covered in unexploded ordinance. It is closed to the general public and since 1998 has been an unstaffed wildlife refuge administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
