Million Dollar Highway (US 550)
The stretch of U.S. Route 550 between Ouray and Silverton is called the "Million Dollar Highway". Plenty of breathtaking scenery, sharp curves, and steep dropoffs, and few guardrails. There are also as many as seventy identified avalanche chutes on the route.
The origin of the name is disputed. Some say it cost a million dollars a mile to build the road; others say the fill dirt used to build the road contains a million dollars in gold ore.
