The World is a presently suspended man-made project to create an archipelago of 300 islands (while the World shows 240 islands) constructed in the shape of a world map and located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The World is one of several artificial island projects being constructed in Dubai, others being the Palm Islands. Like the other artificial island projects, The World is built primarily using sand dredged from the sea. It was developed by Nakheel Properties and was originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.

However, the credit crunch of 2008-2009 has left the project "a disjointed and desolate collection of sandy blots." "The World has been cancelled. It doesn't even look like the world. Basically there is one island that is maintained that is said to be owned by the Sheikh [Dubai's ruler] and the rest looks like a pile of muck," said one local property agent.

Comments

  • Totally waste of money and resources for an unsustainable project! The island will disappear sooner or later again due to water erosion. Permanent dredging works will be required to maintain the shape of the island. Not to mention impact on natural environment...
  • Copy/Paste of what is heard in the media... LAME!!
