Alert (2011 permanent population 0, but with rotating military and scientific personnel), in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada, is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, at latitude 82°30'05" north, 817 kilometres (508 mi) from the North Pole. It takes its name from HMS Alert, which wintered 10 km (6.2 mi) east of the present station, off what is now Cape Sheridan, in 1875–1876.

It also has many temporary inhabitants as it hosts a military signals intelligence radio receiving facility at Canadian Forces Station Alert (CFS Alert), as well as a co-located Environment Canada weather station, a Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) atmosphere monitoring laboratory, and the Alert Airport.

  • Few days ago the Olympic torch has passed here.
  • We have just heard about the place. Is there a recommended airbnb in the area?
  • Hi Rashana, there is no opportunity for tourism in Alert. The closest you can get is probably Resolute Bay. They have a hotel and an airport.
  • well now theres a spot to build a resort, with fishing and photography charters. I would go for sure, in summer though, to dark i n winter for photographing.
  • This is super interesting. I've been searching for a timeline of the sunrise and sunset in any place which would the northern-most inhabited place, but I am not getting much help. Even The Network Weather is not given much info for Quttinirpaaq National Park. My iPhone says the Sunrise is at 8:00 PM and Sunset is at 12:00 AM. I will come back to this wikipamia in hope somebody might leave a comment.
