church, monument, place with historical importance

The Martinikerk or Sint Maartenskerk is mentioned as a parochial church in 1215. In the second quarter of the 13th century a Roman crosschurch was built. Around 1450-1460 a start was made for a bigger gothic choir. In 1545, the walls of the choir had to be painted again in occasion of the visit to Groningen by the landguardian Maria of Hungary. During the painting and others cleaning activities two workers that were hoisted up in the choir, fell dead on the altar. Wallpaintings were found in 1923 under the white layers, and also later, during restaurations, wallpaintings were made visible.
