Independent Air Flight 1851 was an airplane that crashed on 8 February 1989. It was a Boeing 707 flying from Bergamo, Italy to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The plane hit Pico Alto while on approach to Santa Maria Airport in the Azores. The aircraft was destroyed. All of the 144 people on board were killed in the crash. It is the deadliest plane crash in Portugal's history
