The jilaukhana (literally meaning 'in front of house') was a courtyard feature introduced to Mughal architecture by Shah Jahan. It also served Mughal ceremonial purposes and acted as a transition space between the street and the palace or royal building.
The jilaukhana consists of a large courtyard with 128 hujra rooms opening directly onto the courtyard.
Mumtaz's death anniversary (urs) was also observed in the jilaukhana of the Taj Mahal.
