Chameli Farsh (Riverfront Terrace) (Agra)

India / Uttar Pradesh / Agra Cantonment / Agra
panoramic view, interesting place, terrace (building)

In historic accounts of the Taj Mahal complex, the riverfront terrace supporting the mausoleum has been referred to as the kursi, or throne. The primary sandstone terrace supports the Mosque, the Jawab and the centralized, secondary plinth. The mausoleum proper and the four minarets flanking it are situated on this square plinth, which is made of marble and is 93 meters long.
The north, river-facing elevation, known as the Tahkhana, is clad in red sandstone and framed with marble inlay and displays a series of arches. Now closed off, these arches opened up onto a gallery of rooms arranged in a row and connected by a narrow corridor.
