This is the former site of Mitchel Air Force Base, a/k/a Mitchel Field. The 1,117 acre base was deactivated in 1961.
Mitchel's role as a military installation dates back to the Revolutionary War and includes service in every major military conflict from that time, through the Korean War. In 1918, the base was renamed Mitchel Field, in honor of Major John Purroy Mitchel, an aviation pioneer and former mayor of New York City. Mitchel served a vital role in the nation's air defenses, including service as the headquarters for Continental Air Command or CONAC, which was charged with controlling the nation's entire air defense.
Following Mitchel's de-activation in 1961, the land was turned over to Nassau County. Today, Mitchel includes Nassau Community College (which uses the majority of Mitchel's buildings), Hofstra University, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and several office buildings.
In the 1980s, parts of Mitchel were later made part of the Naval Station, NY, which included the Staten Island Homeport (the Stapleton Piers and Ft. Wadsworth and some housing units near Ft Hamilton and included parts of the Brooklyn Navy Yard) most of which was closed by BRAC 1993. In addition to housing for military personnel, the Navy still operates an exchange store in Building 16.
Though closed as an Air Force base in 1961, it still has military housing, a commissary and exchange facilities; with families from military activities in the area.
