ERPM Mine - Hercules Shaft

South Africa / Gauteng / Boksburg /
 mine, mine shaft

This is the old Hercules Mine and Hercules shaft, and while DRDGold was still operating the mine the headgear of Hercules Shaft was demolished in September 2005. Ekurhuleni ward Councillor Douglas Scholtz protested to the South African Heritage Resource Agency about this, but nothing was done. Now all traces of the rich mining history are gone. The first attached picture is from 2002 and shows the still standing mine shaft and surface facilities, with the Hercules House at upper right. The second attached picture is a historical map shown old gold mine leases, with Hercules shown.

Hercules Mine is part of the forgotten history of the East Rand or kurhuleni (Ekurhuleni). Once an independent property with its own directors and staff and 166 claims, it straddled the western bank of the stream running from Boksburg Lake. The mine was situated next to Cinderella Deep Mine and just over a hundred years ago, Hercules Mining company was absorbed by Sir George Farrar’s East Rand Proprietary Mines or E.R.P.M.
