Minami-Tori-shima, also known as Marcus Island, was settled by Japanese colonists in 1886 and officially annexed by Japan in 1898, although this was disputed by the US. Transferred to US control after WWII, the island was finally turned over to Japan in 1968.
In 1964 it became the site of a US Coast Guard Loran-C transmitter (until 2009).
