railway, tunnel, abandoned / shut down, do not draw title, railway tunnel
Tunnel along the former Reading Railroad's City branch which connected its freight main line with the passenger main line, as well as allowing the B&O to access points north of Philadelphia over the Reading's trackage.
The tunnel was largely disused after Conrail rerouted its freight operations after its absorption of the Reading, PRR and other ailing railroads. The last tracks were removed around 1992 after the Philadelphia Inquirer Building, the City branch's last remaining freight customer, ceased shipping operations via rail.
