Catawba uses a pair of Westinghouse pressurized water reactors. Whilst the whole plant is operated by Duke, number one reactor is jointly owned by Duke and North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation , whilst number two is jointly owned by North Carolina Municipal Power Agency, Piedmont Municipal Power Agency, and Saluda River Electric Cooperative Inc.

Catawba Nuclear Station is located on Lake Wylie in York County, South Carolina. The lake was created in 1904 and is the oldest lake on the Catawba River. The lake provides cooling water for both Catawba and the coal-burning Allen Steam Station.
