USA / Pennsylvania / Somerset /
 tunnel, turnpike

One of the 9 tunnels on the South Pennsylvania Railroad alignment that was later bought to become the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Was the only tunnel actually used by an active railroad, the Pittsburgh, Westmoreland and Somerset Railroad, which ran from Somerset, where it connected on to the B&O Railroad, to Ligonier, where it connected on to the Ligonier Valley Railroad and also the Pennsylvania Railroad. The tunnel was also called the Lumber Railroad Tunnel.
The portal is located at mile 106.3. Accessible from the westbound turnpike lanes by stopping at a pulloff. The tunnel's East portal is largely closed, but is accessible due to a roof collapse. The West portal is completely closed.
