During Mughal period a place adjacent to Dhaka Central Jail was a market. Since Governor’s residence was located inside jail premises and the market visited by nobles, the market became known as Badshahi (Padshahi) bazar. In 1709, the Dewan of Dhaka, Nawab Murshid Quli Khan came for a major uplift in expanding and improvement of the market. He laid roads all around a square (chawk) and made the market into a modern commercial centre
