From the mid 18th century until 1880 this was the site of a simple Empire style mansion.
In the 1880-1890s the house was redesigned for the new owner, resulting in its simple classical forms being embellished with eclectic decorations designed by architect C. Y. Soloviev. The most expressive parts of the facade is the three-part second-story window.
In 1881 the house passed to Count Uvarov, one of the founders of the Russian Archaeological Society and Historical Museum in Moscow. After his death in 1884, it passed to his wife P. Uvarov, nee Princess Sherbatova, who served as the prototype for Kitty Shcherbatskaya in Leo Tolstoy's novel, Anna Karenina.
In this mansion, in the years 1909-1930 there met a social organization called "Old Moscow" who dedicated their efforts studying the history of Moscow.
After the 1917 revolution the Moscow Committee of the Bolsheviks located themselves in this house. In 1919, during a meeting by a bomb thrown by anarchists killed several prominent figures of the Communist Party. Restoration of the mansion was done by the architect V. M. Mayat. He also established an urn with a veil and a commemorative plaque with the names of the victims.
