synagogue, historic landmark
This Hebrew temple, located on calle Judíos, was built in the year 1315 (5075 in the Jewish calendar).
It has a patio accessed from the street which leads to a hallway, followed by the prayer hall. On the east side of the room is a staircase that leads to women's gallery.
The prayer hall, almost a square with 6,95 x 6,37 m, is covered by a coffered ceiling and reaches a height of over 6 meters. On its eastern side opens the tabernacle, space reserved for the Torah and topped with an arch framed in a rectangular frame. The opposite wall has a small niche with poly-lobed and pointed arch, which was the altarpiece of Santa Quiteria.
The decoration in plaster, with Moorish motifs, has lost up to two meters high, exposing the wall's bricks.
After the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 the building was dedicated to various functions: hospital, chapel and nursery school until it was declared a National Monument in 1885.
Since then it passed through several phases of restoration, until the reopening of the building in 1985 to celebrate the 850 anniversary of birth of Maimonides.
