Hyperion, California (Los Angeles, California)

USA / California / El Segundo / Los Angeles, California
ghost village, historical layer / disappeared object

The city of L.A. purchased the land that Hyperion stands on in 1892. A newspaper article indicates a pier was here as early as 1907. Until 1925 when a simple screening plant was built here, raw sewage was dumped directly into the ocean. The 1925 plant was replaced with a more modern plant that provided secondary treatment in 1950, which itself was replaced in 1980 as the 25 million pounds of sewage dumped into the ocean was harming marine life, surfers, and the ocean ecology. It was found the only life hardy enough to live in 30 years worth of sewage dumped by the outfall pipes were worms and clams. The sewage outlet pier located here was used by local fishermen and known as Sewage Pier.

Twin Pacific Electric tracks ran through here, with a small spur.

Comments

  • The above photo, from the LAPL photo archives and taken on 13 Dec 1937, shows the former Hyperion pier. The pier was located next to Hyperion Treatment Plant's sewer outfall.
  • I like my croakers, perch, crabs, and mackarel tinged with the intoxicating, savory taste of raw sewage.
