The Richelieu Lyceum was created on the initiative of the Mayor of the city and the Governor of New Russia, Armand-Emmanuel de Vignerot du Plessis, duc de Richelieu.
In 1865 it became the basis of the Odesa University.
Now the Richelieu Lyceum is the secondary educational institution of Odesa, subordinated to the Odesa National University named after Illia Mechnykov (also spelled Ilya Mechnikov, Élie Metchnikoff).
On August 10, 2020, it was renamed the Richelieu Scientific Lyceum.
