Anthology Film Archives

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Second Avenue, 32
 museum, archives institution, interesting place

2-story Italian-Renaissance-style red-brick building completed in 1918. Designed by Alfred Hopkins as the Third District Magistrates Court. Its original purpose as a courthouse and prison is evident in its solid and fortress-like construction. It bears a similarity to the N. Zahles Seminarieskole gymnasium building in Copenhagen. The main entrance of the building on East 2nd Street, as well as the windows on the second floor, are arched and set in elaborate brick round-arch surrounds with fanlights. The small first-floor windows have heavy brick casings, and on the ground floor there are openings with metal grills. Some of the arched windows have been partially infilled with brick.

The building is now occupied by Anthology Film Archives, which screens historic and rare films. An application for a third story addition/expansion by Bone/Levine Architects was approved by the LPC in 2017 and is awaiting commencement.
