This school was founded by the La Salle Christian Brothers on 18 January 1904 and was named after St. John Baptist de La Salle. The school was built at the request of the Education Department and the then Bishop of Malacca, Mgr. Fee. It started with an initial enrolment of 18 boys. It is one of the oldest schools in Malaysia and many historical events took place here. During World War II, crowds of refugees flocked to this school for help and stayed in for security. When the war ended and peace returned, these refugees organized a scholarship fund to express gratitude to the school that have helped them survived the war.
St. John's Institution is renowned as a school that excels in academic studies and was chosen as one of the cluster schools of excellence by the Ministry of Education in 2007. The school with building trademark of red and white Romanesque architectural has been part of building the nation and producing outstanding Malaysians such as the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, several cabinet ministers and corporate personalities. The school has been a part of nation's integral education development for more than a hundred years.
