It arose in the 19th century as part of the Dukyi *Wild" Lane (it came to a dead end). Another name is Filipovska Steet.
In 1939, it received the name Starosportivnaya Street, from the Sports Field located nearby in the 19th - early 20th centuries.
In 1938–1941 it was part of Studencheskaya Street.
Name in honor of the Hero of the Soviet Union Vasily Donchuk – since 1971.
On February 9, 2023, the historical name was returned.
