U.S. Route 29 is a north-south U.S. numbered highway on the east coast of the United States. It runs from Pensacola, Florida to Ellicott City, Maryland, west of Baltimore. It enters Washington, D.C. on the Francis Scott Key Bridge between Arlington, Virginia and Georgetown. It joins the Whitehurst Freeway and passes under Washington Circle in Foggy Bottom, then follows surface streets to Silver Spring, Maryland. In north D.C. it follows Georgia Avenue and passes by Howard University and Walter Reed Medical Center.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, more commonly referred to simply as the Key Bridge, carries Route 29 across the Potomac River between Arlington, Virginia and the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Built in 1929, it is the District's oldest surviving bridge over the Potomac River.
