Formerly Pioneer Drive until Spring 2023, it was renamed to Gussel Drive to honor the longtime Wisconsin Dells resident, businessman, and civic leader Bud Gussel who helped shaped the Wisconsin Dells and Lake Delton communities.

He was born Bernard E(dward) "Bud" Gussel on April 27, 1930 in Stevens Point but moved to Wisconsin Dells when he was 12. Before the Korean War, he attempted to join the Navy, but was rejected due to his color-blindness. He founded Gussel Distributing Co. in 1951 which evolved into Holiday Wholesale. He was also a fireman and fire department officer for Kilbourn Fire Department from 1953 until 1973, a Rotarian, and city council alderperson. Gussel passed away on April 17, 2021 in Wisconsin Dells at the assisted living facility Riverwood Senior Living at age 90.
