Interstate 295 (I-295) is a north-south auxiliary interstate route serving as a northern and eastern bypass for the City of Richmond and as an alternate route for I-95 and I-64 traffic to avoid downtown. At almost 53 miles it is the longest auxiliary interstate in Virginia. The entire route is mostly 6-8 lanes at 70 mph, with nearly every interchange being a full cloverleaf. The route serves major Richmond suburbs such as Short Pump, Mechanicsville, Highland Springs, and Hopewell. Its southern terminus is on I-95 near Petersburg, while its northwestern terminus is on I-64 near Short Pump. The Varina-Enon Bridge, which carries I-295 over the James River, is one of the tallest bridges in Virginia.
