New street opened between the Grote Markt and the Olifantstraat as a connection between the old city centre and the new station district, according to the approved plan of 7.03.1871, modified and widened according to the plan of city architect F.A. Bruneel, approved by Royal Decree of 27.05.1875. Subdivided from the 1880s onwards. Central axis with a mainly residential character with mansions of the large textile manufacturers, including the Portois family (demolished) and Degand-Dopchie.
