Interstate 66 (Virginia)
Interstate 66 (I-66) is an east-west mainline interstate route. It goes eastward from I-81 near Strasburg, Virginia to Washington, D.C. via Front Royal, Haymarket, Fairfax, and Arlington. It is a major commuter route between D.C. and Northern Virginia to the west, especially east of Haymarket. It has been expanded to eight lanes in places, with HOV lanes and peak-hour shoulder lanes. Historically, Arlington County has been resistant to the interstate and so the road through the county is a major commuter bottleneck with only two lanes in each direction and HOV restrictions for all traffic during rush hour. There are ongoing proposals for widening from Haymarket to the D.C. line. Originally it was intended to follow the route of U.S. Highway 211. Today, however, it roughly follows Virginia Route 55 from Strasburg to Gainesville and U.S. Route 29 from Gainesville to its terminus in D.C.
