Interstate 395 (I-395) is a north-south auxiliary interstate route connecting Washington, D.C. to Northern Virginia and I-95. Its northern terminus is at Route 50 (New York Avenue) in D.C. and its southern end is at the Springfield Interchange where it meets I-95 and I-495 at the Capital Beltway. It provides access from D.C. to Arlington, Alexandria, Springfield, and points south. It also connects to I-695 and I-295 giving access to Maryland and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. In D.C., the interstate is comprised of two distinct parts: the Southwest Freeway and the Center Leg Freeway, which meet at the Southeast Freeway (I-695). The interstate also features the 14th Street Bridges crossing the Potomac River from Virginia and the Third Street tunnel, which carries the Center Leg Freeway under the National Mall.

There are plans to renumber the Center Leg Freeway as Interstate 195 to reduce confusion through the Interstate 695 interchange. Interstate 695 would be renumbered as 395. The change has been approved by FHWA but the actual change and replacement of signs is still being planned and may occur in 2022.
