Payaswini River (Chandragiri Puzha in Kerala)

Chandragiri also known by the name Payaswini is a river in Kasaragod district of Kerala state, south India. On the banks of this river is 17th century Chandragiri fort. The river got its name Chandragiri from the place of its orgin, Chandragupta Vasti, where the Maurya emperor Chandragupta is believed to have spent his last days as a sage.

This river is considered as the traditional boundary between Tulu Nadu and Malayalam regions of Kerala.

It is the longest river which flows through Kasargod District of Kerala. Payaswani is the main tributary of this river. The river has a length of 105 km and a basin area of 1406 sq km. Chandragiri River drains a catchment area of 1406 sq km out of which 836 sq km lie in Karnataka and the remaining in Kerala

The river originates in a village called Koinadu of Kodagu district in Karnataka state. It flows in a north-westerly direction through Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. In Sullia taluk, it is the major water source for domestic and agricultural purposes. It then flows west to Kasaragod district of Kerala state, and links with Machipuram (Machipana) about 15 kms upstream of their out fall point into Arabian sea near Kasaragud before joining the Arabian sea.
