Gold Coast Railroad Museum at ZOO MIAMI
Train rides plus static displays of Steam and Diesel locomotive engines, passenger cars and other railroad memorabilia. US Rail Car Number One...the Pullman Car "FERDINAND MAGELLAN" is on display here. The Magellan was constructed for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was used by Harry S. Truman as well. It was the site of the famous photo showing President Truman holding up the erroneous newspaper with the banner headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN". It was used by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as he traveled the northeat US campaigning for re-election. The museum is built on the site of the former Richmond Naval Air Station Blimp Hangars. Richmond NAS was built in 1941-2 as a base for spotter blimps used to protect Florida-area shipping from German U-Boat attacks. It survived the war intact but was destroyed on September 15, 1945, when a suspected Category 4 hurricane hit the airfield directly. One of the enormous blimp hangars caught fire, possibly from a spark, and every building on the field was destroyed, along with all aircraft on the field at the time.
