The 20,000-square-foot water education center, on Searl Parkway in Hemet, is owned by the Metropolitan Water District and was meant to show the history and importance of water in California. In 2007, the Los Angeles-based water company canceled the building lease with the nonprofit organization that it created to operate the center.

Almost two years after the Center for Water Education left the premises, a new entity could soon be occupying the massive water-education building near the East Dam of Diamond Valley Lake.

The Metropolitan Water District has directed staff to pursue discussions with potential partners regarding use of the facility. Potential tenants could be considered by the board by the fall of 2008.

The MWD board also authorized spending $37,000 a month to operate the Diamond Valley Lake Visitor Center at the water-education building until a long-term partner is found to run it.
