Hassel Island has been used as a strategic site to defend the Charlotte Amalie harbor for several hundred years, most notably during the Napoleonic Wars. Ruins of several forts remain. Hassel Island is also the site of one of the earliest steam-powered marine railways and the basis for the fictional setting of Herman Wolk's novel "Don't Stop the Carnival." Once connected to the main island, Hassel Island was separated from St. Thomas by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1919.
