island, invisible
Saint Martin is one of the Leeward Islands in the north-eastern part of the Caribbean Sea. The island is divided among two nations. The northern portion (Saint Martin) has an area of 53.2 km² (20.5 sq.mi.), about 33,000 inhabitants and is a overseas collectivity of France. The southern portion (Sint Maarten) has an area of 34 km² (13.1 sq.mi.), about 35,000 inhabitants and is an island territory of the Netherlands Antilles, a country that is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This yields the curiosity that the French portion is part of the European Union, but the Dutch portion is not. Saint Martin is also the only location where the Kingdom of the Netherlands shares a border with the French Republic. The island is a popular mass tourism destination.
