Anyang is a city in Henan province, east China. It was the capital of the Bronze Age Shang Dynasty between 1554 and 1045 BC. It was known as Yin during theat period. Later during the Three Kingdoms period it was the capital of the Wei Kingdom (220-65). Ruins of the ancient Shang city was discovered in 1899 by peasants on the banks of the Huan or Anyang River, a tributary of the Yellow River. Nowadays iron and steel smelting are the principal industries, using local coal and iron ore from the nearby Hanxing mining area,. Engineering and the manufacture of textiles are also important.
