Ice Fields Treaty

Chile / Aisen / Coihaique /
 glacier, frontier post

Due to unfinished surveys and other problems the border between Chile and Argentina have not been finalized in this area.
Fifty kilometers of the Chile–Argentina border, between Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Murallon, remain undefined, on the ice field. This Southern Patagonian Ice Field section of the border is the last remaining border issue between Chile and Argentina.

Comments

  • All surveys were finished in 2009 and the maps for such area already printed and handed to Chile's lawmakers for final approval;but nobody in the goverment is ready to take the political cost of the signing.(that's the "other problem")
  • Some years ago I heard of a ski expedition crossing this icefield using parasails to help pull them along. During the trip Malacite, a rich copper mineral was found. If this indication of copper deposits is ever relocated it will create another block in the way of settling this dispute.
