In 1986 the North Shore Unitarian Universalist Society (founded 1945) bought the 101-acre former Payson Estate whose home was incorporated into a new structure designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. The congregation moved from its church in Plandome into its new home in 1993. The purchase was partially funded by oil royalties given by Caroline Veatch which has since ballooned into a $425mil endowment.
