Built during the early 1930's, Elm Grove was an extended stay campground for people looking to escape the heat of San Antonio for a month or two in the summertime. It began converting into a small housing community in the 1940's and 50's as the owner, A.J. Greeby, began to sell off the small rustic summer cabins to individuals for use as permanent homes. At one time there was a small store, an automobile repair shop and several other small businesses including a gas station and small engine repair. By the 1970's, almost all of the original summer cabins had been sold off and either torn down or converted into homes; only the small part of the original campground which fronted the Guadalupe river remained. Primarily an RV campground, Elm Grove was a popular destination for many people looking to spend a few days playing on the river all throughout the 1970's and 80's; eventually closing in the mid 1990's when the owner decided to retire and sold the property to a real estate developer. Today, Elm Grove is a small rural neighborhood of a little less than two hundred homes. Though the homes are not expensive or lavish, most of the residents of Elm Grove are glad to be part of this beautiful and friendly community on the banks of the Guadalupe river. It has been surmised that had Elm Grove had a through road that connected it to the opposite side of the river, it very well may have become a small town or even a city.
