Established in 1865 to bury U.S. soldiers killed in the Civil War, on site of an army post used as headquarters of the Union occupation forces stationed in the Raleigh area. Contains grave of one Medal of Honor recipient (William Maud Bryant, Sergeant First Class, U. S. Army, Company A, 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces, Vietnam War).
