  • I first visited 'Paradise Bay' in 1955. We got off the Marfa bus on the main road just past the Red Tower. We walked westwards for about half-a-mile along a rough track, not fit for cars, and then north for about 300yds on a path alongside a dry watercourse which led to a mass of giant bamboos. We had to scramble down a slope through the vegetation. There were no steps. No other road or carpark, no hotel opposite or Gozo ferry landing stage. This was one of my favourite spots for spearfishing. Usually the only Maltese we met were fishermen coming in by boat. I strongly suspect that this bay was given its English name by British servicemen, who seemed to be its only visitors in the 1950s.
