Bagansiapiapi (Ba5-gan2-a1-pi2 峇眼亞比 in Hokkien)is a small city located at the mouth of Rokan River.
The town area is mostly populated by Hokkien Chinese originated from Tang5-ua*1 同安 (Fujian, China 中國福建省); some are from Kim1-mng5 金門, Cin3-kang1 晉江, Tio5-ciu1 潮州 and some Khek4 客人. Chinese here preserve Hokkien language. It was one of the biggest centers of fishing, with most population worked as fishermen. Nowadays it also produces "bird-nest", Chinese tonic harvested from sparrow's nest.
Rural areas usually are populated by Riau Malay, Batak and other Indonesian tribes.
