Colonel Rudel died in Rosenheim on 18th November 1982, and was buried in Dornhausen.
Although the German Defence Ministry gave strict order not to participate in his funeral, not only former comrades but several active officers took part and even three F-4 Phamtom Jets flew honour formation over the ceremony...inadvertently, as the pilots later reported.
