At one time this tower was right by the river and was vital to fighting off naval attack. "Mad" King Henry VI also died here (presumably of murder) during the War of the Roses.

Wakefield Tower was built Henry III between 1220 and 1240. The tower was an addition to the existing buildings in the palace, which he enlarged and improved. As well as containing the King's pricipal private room it was also a a strongpoint in the tower's enlarged defences.
