tower, 13th century construction
The Beauchamp Tower (Pronounced "Beecham") was one of the towers used for keeping prisoners, including the future Queen Elizabeth I. This was built by Edward I in 1281 when it replaced a fortified gatehouse that stood on this site. The tower was said to be named after Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, who was a prisoner here between 1397 and 1399. Also known as Cobham's Tower after Henry Brooke, Lord Cobham, who died here after 14 years of imprisonment.
